Locomotive Standards And Rules

Standards

Locomotives run on this layout shall match all of the following requirements:

Locomotives should meet the following requirements:

Other Rules

Most of the following "rules" are derived from various documents. They are intended to make operations more interesting. They include rules that pertain primarily to consisting of diesel electric locomotives. As I don't have a large number of electric locomotives they will almost never be found in a consist. Noted exceptions are listed where they are applicable.

Mixed Power

With the exception of designated trains, no more than the equivalent of 24 conventional axles may be operated under power on the head end of a train. (High-Adhesion axles are equivalent to 1 and 1/3 conventional axles and AC traction axles are equivalent to 1 and 1/2 conventional axles) The following table shows examples of mixed power. (32 powered axles for solid commodity trains. (unit trains))

Locomotive Consist
(Asterisk (*) denotes High Adhesion and Pound (#) denotes AC Traction)
Equivalent to (Conventional Axles) Locomotive Consist in compliance
2 *SD60M + 1 *SD60 24 Yes
2 #SD80MAC + 1 SD40-2 24 Yes
2 GP40 + 1 *GP59 + 1 *GP60 18 1/3 Yes
3 *P42DC 16 Yes
2 *SD60 + 1 #SD80MAC 25 No

Dynamic Brakes

If a consist includes one or more units equipped with standard dynamic brakes, not more than 202,000 pounds of dynamic braking force may be used on the head end of the train. If all of the units are equipped with Extended Range or Extended Range High Capacity dynamic brakes, not more than 180,000 pounds of dynamic braking force may be used on the head end of the train. (This rule is just simulated, and doesn't pose any true operational considerations. Units that cause the train to exceed this limit will be assumed to have had the dynamic brakes cut out.)

Dynamic Brake Braking Force per Axle  Braking Force for Each 4-Axle Unit Braking Force for Each 6-Axle Unit
Standard 10,000lbs. 40,000lbs. 60,000lbs.
Extended Range 10,000lbs. 40,000lbs. 60,000lbs.
Extended Range (High Capacity) 13,500lbs. 54,000lbs. 81,000lbs.
